Books MAYONNAISE JAR and 2 CUPS OF COFFEE When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. Next, the professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "YES." The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are! important to you. So... Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play With your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. Treat yourself to the hair salon. Go to the movies :)

    Gratitude

    Friday, August 8, 2008, 06:29 PM [General]

I have so much to be grateful for and I try to hold that thought in my conscious awareness every day.  Some years ago, I was angry, very angry.  A pedaphile had been senctenced to only 5 years goal, even though he had pleaded guilty.  I felt very deeply that his sin against humanity and my family was the worst crime of all because  his actions were soul destroying as well as physically assaulting his victims and the family of his victims.

My guide took me by surprise and said "no".  "Ingratitude was the worst aberration of humankind".

I said "What?" "Worse than murder?" I was outraged.  It was incomphensible to me at the time.

Later I was to understand that as Ingratitude is the worst we could inflict on another, Betrayal was a close second.  Any time that we undermine or hurt the soul of another, we could effectively be changing the evolution of that soul.  The consequences of emotional and psychological abuse, potentially affect the attitudes of the soul.  We are karmically responsible for every thought, action, word and deed.

The next time someone pays you a compliment or offers to help, stop for just a moment, and say thank you.  How did you feel the last time you said something supportive or nice, or offered to help and you were not appreciated, slighted or taken for granted? Maybe it was unintentional, maybe it was ingratitude.

When we behave and act from a position of always practicing to offer an unconditional positive regard for one another, we are coming from a place of compassion, forgiveness and acceptance of that person.   When we are confronted with another person's ingratitude, we can choose to consider ourselves fortunate to know the difference and not harbour negative feelings.

Our attitude is always our choice.  I am the only person responsible for my feelings.
